Dineo Koontse is one of BAVA’s dedicated Events Coordinators and a proud member of both the BAVA community and the Bua Learning Community. Born and raised in Selebi-Phikwe, Dineo is a proud Mokwena woman who embodies the spirit of service, unity, and empowerment. She is deeply committed to helping build a strong “village” where Batswana children feel connected, supported, and safe in their cultural identity.
Dineo first came to Australia as an international student and completed her studies at RMIT University, earning a degree in Occupational Health and Safety. After graduating, she returned to Botswana where she built a career in the mining and construction industries.
During her time there, she played a pivotal role in a project focused on upskilling women in construction — creating opportunities for young women with no prior experience to step into training programs, gain essential skills, and progress into leadership roles. This work strengthened her belief in the Setswana proverb “Mosadi ke thari ya sechaba” — the understanding that when a woman is empowered, she becomes the backbone and lifeline of her community.
In 2017, Dineo migrated back to Australia with her family, settling in Queensland for six years. There, she successfully ran a food truck business that became a familiar feature at concerts and sporting events across Southeast Queensland. This entrepreneurial journey not only sharpened her organisational, logistics, and event management skills but also deepened her love for bringing people together through shared cultural experiences. The pandemic eventually forced the closure of the business, but the lessons from that season strengthened her resilience, creativity, and leadership.
Dineo returned to Melbourne in 2022 and soon after joined the Bua Learning Community, where her passion for culture, education, and community building continued to grow. Today, she actively contributes to the BAVA Association, helping design events that bring Batswana together, celebrate Setswana culture, and create meaningful spaces for connection, pride, and belonging.
Grounded, warm, and purpose-driven, Dineo continues her mission to uplift women, strengthen families, and contribute to a thriving Batswana community in Victoria. She firmly believes that empowered individuals create empowered communities — and she shows this through every role she takes on.
